Steps, Walks and Walkways

Steps, Walks and WalkwaysYou don’t really want to trample on your green, healthy grass when you wish to take a stroll through your garden. Walkways, though very vital, are generally ignored or disregarded. They connect your home to the various areas of your landscape. For example, if you have a pool or a garden installed a little away from your primary residential structure, a walkway would ensure you don’t have to walk on grass to reach your destination. That makes walkway pavers one of the most important aspects of your landscape planning.

We at Setting Sun Patios & Decks have often advised our clients to plan their pavement and hardscaping before planning the rest of their landscape. In our projects in Raleigh, Cary, Wake Forest, Garner and Apex, we have paid special attention to creatively incorporate the walks and steps in the overall design of the space. Our projects in Chapel Hill, Durham, Morrisville, Knightdale and Clayton have involved building walkways with different materials and in varied designs.

Material Matters

The type of material you use for your walkways and steps matters a great deal in their overall look, design and maintenance. Paver walkway designs are greatly influenced by the materials used in their construction.

  • Flagstone: Flagstone is a very popular material for a walkway. It looks natural and attracts attention immediately. The color and texture are a great addition to the overall design. Aside from looks, flagstone also has other, more practical advantages. For example, it has a textured surface so you won’t slip on it. The material is very durable and also absorbs water naturally. Moreover, sometimes grass and vegetation can grow through the gaps and add a different charm to the entire setting.

  • Brick: Like Flagstone, brick is also extremely popular and fits in especially well with old, colonial or craftsman style homes. Brick walkways have a timeless charm to them, and they fit in naturally in a garden or a lawn. The material is also permeable to an extent and very durable. The best advantage of brick is the easy repair and maintenance. If a brick or a few bricks on your walkway are damaged, you can simply remove them and have them replaced. Moreover, they just need a washing with soap and water every now and then to look great.

  • Concrete: Concrete is very versatile, and can be used in a variety of different ways on walkways. Some designs call pavers while others include adding color to a poured concrete installation. You can add decorative borders to the path or use stamped concrete to give it a unique look. The options with concrete are limitless and it’s also why an increasing number of people are utilizing it.

Testimonials
Unbelievable Patio design and installation. I had about 10 different companies come out and give us a quote for our patio, and nobody could touch Randy's "vision".

He won us over at the first meeting, and I could not be happier with the end result. Our patio and fire pit are amazing, and we now have the official impromptu party house of the neighborhood!
