Many homeowners come to us with a request to create a patio as an extension to their living space. Adding a fire pit to the design became our frequent recommendation as this often-undervalued feature generally becomes the absolute favorite part of the new patio. Fire pits are not necessarily just an aesthetic addition. Yes, they provide ambiance and natural light, but their functionality goes well beyond just the visual part.
A fire pit is an excellent focal point and a space where visitors tend to gravitate. It’s an easy-to-spot anchor usually surrounded by chairs and reflecting a living-room-like setting. It does not obstruct the view, hence conversations can continue to flow naturally with the guests sitting directly across.
North Carolina experiences crisp evenings throughout the year – not just in fall or winter. A fire pit extends the time outdoors beyond the warm months. As the temperature drops, a fire pit continues to keep the patio space comfortable.
There are four main types of fire pits:
- Natural Gas Fire Pits
These installations require a natural gas line connected to the fire pit. They are easy to operate as there is a constant supply of fuel, and they are fairly inexpensive to operate. - Wood-Burning Fire Pits
There’s nothing that compares to the sound of burning wood. They provide great heat but can produce smoke and require a steady supply of wood. - Propane Fire Pits
Similar to the gas fire pits, they offer convenience. In addition, propane fire pits are usually in the form of a table that can be moved to various spots within your patio. - Gel Fuel Fire Pits
Generally, much smaller and used primarily for ambience. These are a great option when the space is very restricted.
